Tour of "Embrace" installation at Denver Art Museum

While at the WebWise conference in Denver, I briefly played hookie to check out the "Embrace" exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. The DAM commissioned 17 artists to create artwork directly on the walls of the Hamilton wing of the museum. What resulted was an eclectic and funky exploration of space, angles and movement. I thoroughly enjoyed encountering all of the "Embrace" pieces, but probably the most affecting was "Bert H?lldobler and Edward O. Wilson in the Rain" by Tobias Rehberger, which you can see me delving into toward the middle of the video. Basically it's a maze of thousands of bungee cords suspended from ceiling to floor that you very gingerly navigate through. The kids loved it, shrieking with delight. Most of the adults, including myself, were more cautious and even frightened by it. One older woman said to her friend, "I hate this, I want out." I love how "Embrace" invites the visitor to explore every corner of the museum, looking for the pieces tucked into odd corners and alcoves. And the audio descriptions by the artists that you can access from your cell phone are a nice touch. Perhaps the best multi-artist installation I've ever seen.

This video is my first attempt at explaining publicly something Quakers call a spiritual "Leading" that was first shared at Brooklyn Meeting last Sunday. I consider it a Leading because it's still working itself out inside of me, and feels like there's a lot more there to be revealed over time.

One of the things I struggle with as I explain it to other people is the performative aspect of sharing the Leading with others. (i.e. I kind of messed up the hand stand freeze in the video and felt like doing that part over, but in retrospect decided to leave it.)

Anyway, I hope you understand and can take something away from this Leading as it currently stands. A work-in-progress, obviously.
